Numbers

We begin with tracing, counting, matching, recognizing and adding.

Tracing

We trace the numbers in Sylvan's PreK Page Per Day Numbers (book cover with link below). Teachers Pay Teachers has a free "Numbers 1-10" printable available for download here. Free worksheets to trace numbers are available for download here from Worksheetfun.com. Also free for download are Tracing Numbers 1-5 available here from Activity Shelter.

Counting

We count from 1 – 100 pointing to the number on the Hundred Activity Mat by Learning Resources (picture of mat with link below). This mat is big enough to sit on. A free hundred chart is available here from Super Teacher Worksheets. Other hundred charts are available too found here.

Matching

We match the Number Flash Cards by Scholastic Teaching Resources (picture of flash cards with link below) showing the numeral and the word form from

0 - 100 to the hundred activity mat. Also available are Teachers Pay Teachers Ten-Frame Flash Cards showing the ten-frame representation, the numeral, and word form from 0 - 20 can be found here.

Recognizing

These three activities listed above (tracing, counting, and matching) help to recognize a number as a numeral and build a framework for counting forward. There is an animated fun video from Busy Beavers at the very bottom of the page to reinforce these skills for about 30 minutes.

Before we can begin to add, we have to develop number sense. This is called subitizing which means instantly recognizing quantities.

There are a number of articles and blogs about number sense/subitizing and activities to build this skill. Please find a list of the best articles and blogs below.

  • ACTIVITIES: Please find a list of activities to reinforce building Number Sense here by Proud to be PRIMARY.

  • ARTICLE: Subitizing -- a Skill that Leads to Strong Number Sense: Recognizing Patterns and Numbers Supports Operational Fluency by ThoughtCo.

  • ARTICLE: Number Sense by TeacherVision.

  • ARTICLE: by the Math Coach's Corner found here that describes using dice or ten-frames as structured arrangements.

  • ARTICLE: by the Math Coach's Corner found here describes recognizing a group of objects such as the pictures of fingers, tick marks, or dice pips shown below. And how we progress to recognize a group of objects or to combine groups of objects as a quantity.

Adding

To begin adding, we add 1+1 using one finger from each hand.

Then 1+2 and 2+1, changing the hand that holds up two fingers.

See activity below showing cutout of hand tracing with the fingers free to do addition and count.

Also please find below a link to Learning Resources Counterpillar which is an abacus for kids that can count to 20 with numerals 1-10 at the bottom.
